ADCom Solutions Assists In Hurricane Sandy Relief Effort

ADCom Solutions, a leading provider of managed IT services for some of the nation’s largest enterprises, recently welcomed a group of its employees back home from the storm-ravaged Northeast, where they were providing help for victims of Hurricane Sandy.  ADCom team members joined up with the Dallas-based, nonprofit military veterans group Honor Courage Commitment (HCC) before heading off to New York and surrounding states.  By the time they got back, the group had traveled through 14 states, trekked over 3,700 miles, and logged 304 hours of volunteer time in the Hurricane Sandy relief effort.

The combined group of volunteers set up shop in Rockaway Beach, N.Y., one of the areas hardest hit by the storm.  There, Team Rubicon provided the hospitality and assigned daily work orders for the group.  The ADCom team took off their IT hats and put on their work gloves, assisting residents in debris removal, demolition, and general cleanup. Conor Butts, an ADCom employee and volunteer who participated in the recovery effort, was in awe of the damage left behind by the storm.  He said the group helped several families while on-site, but a couple of them stood out in his memory in particular.

He said that one the families they helped consisted of only an uncle and his nephew.  The uncle was a Marine veteran who was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and was on disability assistance.  Their house on Rockaway Beach took on 5 feet of water, forcing them to completely gut the interior walls, flooring, fixtures, and wiring.  The two had been working on the house for nearly four weeks by the time the combined ADCom and HCC group arrived.  The uncle told them that because of the number of volunteers that came to help out, they did a week’s worth of work in a day, helping the residents finish up so they could start the recovery process.

Another house they worked at, Butts said, belonged to an 86-year-old woman who lived alone with five dogs and a cat.  She was trapped inside the house when the storm hit, and before she knew it she was waist-deep in water.  With no power or heat, she managed to find her way upstairs to the second floor, where she sat cold, wet, and in pitch-black darkness waiting for daylight to come.  Eventually, the waters receded from her home and she was rescued, but had to move temporarily out of state and give up three of her dogs and the cat to adoption while her house is being reconstructed.  She lost nearly all of her possessions in the flood, but the volunteers helped her remove the remainder of the debris from her home and repair or remove some of the flooring and interior walls that had been damaged by water and had begun to grow mold.

Butts said he was deeply moved by the fortitude of the people he met in Rockaway Beach and surrounding areas, and was grateful for the opportunity to help.  He thanked ADCom management for allowing him the opportunity to take time away from his position with the company to assist in the Hurricane Sandy relief effort. “Our part was small,” he said, “but I feel sure we did some good and helped the folks of Rockaway Beach start the process of rebuilding their lives.”
